Captive portals are the de facto standard for onboarding users to the guest WiFi network while on-site. However, we all know that captive portals have their drawbacks, especially in terms of user experience and security. The advent of MAC randomization may occasionally require users to repeatedly go through the captive portal onboarding process.
Passpoint solves these security and user experience issues by automatically connecting users to Wi-Fi upon their arrival. You can start deploying Passpoint in parallel with the traditional captive portal and create Passpoint enrollment experiences that gradually transition the user base from the legacy captive portal to Passpoint.
Step 1: create a new SSID
Passpoint runs on a separate SSID from the traditional Captive Portal network. You should create a new dedicated SSID with any name and configure it with WPA2 Enterprise security. Additionally, configure the necessary Hotspot 2.0 network parameters for this SSID, including the Domain Name that identifies the organization as the home network provider.

Step 2: onboard users
There are three main channels you can use to enroll users into Passpoint:
-
Mobile Apps: Incorporate our WiFi SDK into your mobile app to develop an in-app enrollment experience. This experience can be triggered through a menu, a push notification, or an interstitial call to action. Don't hesitate to contact the Cloud4Wi team for inspiration and recommendations on creating the optimal enrollment experience.

Passpoint Portals: Passpoint portals enable users to download a WiFi profile from a web page. These portals are fully customizable, allowing you to configure identification and registration options. Each Passpoint portal has a unique URL that can be shared as a link in emails or text messages or embedded in QR codes.
For instance, you can utilize these portals to invite your existing users who are already enrolled in the guest WiFi to install a profile, enhancing their experience when they return to your locations.
