Install Volare Sense
Volare Sense can be wall mounted using the screws included in the package.
We provide in the package also two pieces of tape to attach Volare Sense to the wall or to any slick surface; Volare Sense is very light and the tape can hold the device without any problem.
In the basic configuration setup, the device requires only to be powered up. The package includes a USB to micro-USB cable of 3 feet and the USB power adapter (US and EU type).
We suggest to use the USB power adapter provided in the package, however you can also use any other USB power adapter or an alternative power source (for example a powered USB plug on an external device) as long as it can provide at least 2.1 A. You can also replace the USB cable with a longer one in case the power source is far from the target installation point.
Set up Volare Sense
Volare Sense is already configured to connect to the Cloud Manager also using an existing WAN connection. The procedure requires the user to connect the device to an Ethernet connection by connecting it to the ETH1 port using an RJ45 cable.
Once the cable is connected, the device must be powered on by using the USB power plug.
After 2-5 minutes the device is ready to be registered in Volare as described in the chapter “Activate Volare Sense”.
Volare Sense can optionally use WiFi backhauling in order to send the probe data collection to the Cloud Engine. This method allows the device to be positioned in an area that is not covered by cable connection but in the range of an existing WiFi.
Once powered on using for the first time, the device broadcasts a setup WiFi SSID named “SENSE-XXXXXXXXXX” where the X part contains the last 5 octets of the MAC address.
To initiate the set-up the user should connect to the SSID and open a browser to the following URL: http://192.168.2.1/
The setup page displays a list of available WiFi networks in the area, the user selects the network and provides the password.
Once the device successfully connects to the Cloud Engine, it will display a success message and it will notify the user that the Setup SSID will be disconnected within 2 minutes. At this point, the device is ready to be registered in Volare as described in the chapter “Activate Volare Sense”.
Where to install
Volare Sense can be installed easily in any indoor environment, as it requires only the power connection.
The chassis provides a wall mount option, either using the screws included in the box or using the tape, as the device is very light and the tape itself can hold firmly.
The device is small and not invasive, designed to adapt to multiple installation scenarios.
The process of selecting the locations where to install needs to start with the definition of the business requirement, and the use cases where the Sense is intended to be used.
The device has an omnidirectional antenna and collects data with the same sensitivity from all directions. You can install it vertically (for example wall mounted) or horizontally (for example on the ceiling).
If you want to collect data in an area, you have to imagine that you can create a bubble around the position of the Sense, with a radius maximum of 15 meters (the actual reception range depends on the specific environment and, as a general rule, it is the same of an access point).
For example, if you want to cover a corner area, make sure you install it in such way that the bubble you are going to define can reach every corner.
Take into account that walls and the furniture can attenuate the wireless signals and so the detection area also. So make sure there are no obstacles between the Volare Sense and the target area you want to cover. As a general rule, tick brick walls cause a big attenuation, while thin separation walls cause less attenuation. Glass walls also cause a bit of attenuation as well as any generic furniture object on the floor.
If you want to limit the coverage to a specific area, you can do so by defining the radius of reception in the definition of the Virtual Zone in your account. However also the installation position is important. For example, let’s consider the example below by assuming you want to cover the fitting rooms of an apparel store. There are two possibilities depicted in the figure: one assumes you can install the device in the middle of the area, for example on the ceiling; the second one assumes you install the device at the corner and define a radius big enough to cover the entire area. The first option appears better as it minimizes the area of reception outside of the target area.

User case: location analytics
When using the Volare Sense to collect location analytics in your spaces, you first have to identify the area of the store you want to get data from. Take into account that in your Account you can define the spaces as a collection of Senses and define a reception range individually for each of them.
If your goal is to get store-level analytics and you don’t need specific zone-based metrics, make sure to install the Volare Sense in such way they cover the entire floor plan.
User case: visitors presence detection
When using the Volare Sense to detect the proximity of visitors to a certain area, the choice is driven by engagement goals. Usually, you can define a narrow range around a Sense if you want to make sure to detect the proximity of a visitor to a specific zone of the store.
Activate Volare Sense
Once you installed the Volare Sense, you need to provision in on your Volare Space account.
Go to Manage > Sensors page to see the list of active Senses
Click the “Add” button and fill the form. You need the following data:
- Serial Number: you can find this information on the back of the device ("S/N")
- MAC Address: you can find this information on the back of the device ("MAC")
In the main page, you can see the list of active Volare Sense.
The last column shows the status of the Volare Sense, by indicating if the device is connected online and registered in the system.
If you installed and configured yourVolare Sense correctly, it should show up as connected a few minutes after the installation.
