Passpoint is based on the hotspot 2.0 standard. Despite being around for several years, this technology has not been adopted by all smartphone vendors.
At this time, Cloud4Wi Passpoint supports:
- All iOS devices (from iOS7)
- Hotspot 2.0 capable Android devices with Android 6.0 or higher
- Mac laptops with OSX Mavericks and OSX Yosemite (or higher)
- Windows 10 (or higher) > Coming soon
The installation of the Wi-Fi profile, when it is done from a web portal, requires the OS to recognize the Wi-Fi profile as a special configuration file and automatically open the proper processes to configure the phone. Unfortunately, not all browsers are designed to recognize this type of file.
When using browsers that are not able to recognize the Wi-Fi profile, Passpoint can still be activated, but the user needs to open manually the file after the download and go through some configuration steps. At this time, the Passpoint service has been designed to only work on supported browsers in order to simplify the user experience.
iOS devices
All iOS devices now in circulation already support Passpoint.
Only Safari at this time supports the optimized download and installation of Wi-Fi profiles.
Android devices
Despite being supported by the Android OS since Android 6.0, hotspot 2.0 functionalities have sometimes been disabled by the OEM vendors. Starting from Android 12, all OEM manufacturers will be forced to enable by default the support of hotspot 2.0.
At this time, Passpoint is supported by a list of devices that is continually updated by our engineering department. In general, all devices with Android 10 and 11 support Passpoint.
Some devices support Passpoint also on Android 8 and 9 (for example all the Samsung Galaxy and Note series).
At this time, only Google Chrome and Samsung Internet browsers support the optimized download and installation of Wi-Fi profiles.
